Subject: | Jewish American Heritage Month |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution declaring May 2014 as “Jewish American Heritage Month” in Pennsylvania. Jewish American Heritage Month began in 1980 when Congress passed legislation authorizing and requesting the President to issue a proclamation designating a week in April or May as Jewish Heritage Week. President Carter issued the first proclamation in April 1980, and spoke about the many contributions made by the Jews to the culture and history of the United States. Then on February 14, 2006, Congress issued a concurrent resolution urging the President to issue a proclamation each year calling on state and local governments to observe American Jewish History Month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities. President Bush issued the first Presidential Proclamation on April 20, 2006, designating May 2006 as Jewish American Heritage Month. Each year since then, celebrations take place throughout the month of May to recognize the more than 350-year history of Jewish contributions to American culture. Please join me in recognizing May 2014 as “Jewish American Heritage Month” in Pennsylvania by co-sponsoring this resolution. If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Seidl of my office at kseidl@pahouse.net or 7-4117. Thank you. |
