MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 10, 2014 10:09 AM
From: Representative Greg Vitali
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Honoring Ray Brachman for his Service to his State and Nation

In the near future, Representative Scavello and I plan to introduce a resolution honoring Ray Brachman, a native of Delaware County, who was instrumental in the development of military equipment, some of which was critical for the development of cruise missiles and global positioning systems (GPS).

While working at Philadelphia’s Frankford Arsenal, Ray Brachman was responsible for the design, development and fielding of the first-ever militarized digital computer to be used by the Armed Forces. Known as the Field Artillery Data Computer (FADAC), this innovative device was first deployed in 1961 and was used in artillery fire direction centers during the Vietnam War and thereafter. In addition, Ray Brachman and his associates pioneered the concept of automatic testing for internal combustion engines, a breakthrough that has now been universally embraced by all modern vehicle manufacturers.

Ray Brachman was a U.S. Marine Corps officer, serving in World War II and the Korean War. Brachman graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, and then from the University of Pennsylvania with a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.

Please join us in recognizing Ray Brachman’s significant contributions to the development of military equipment and his service to his state and nation.
