MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 14, 2014 05:10 PM
From: Representative Maria P. Donatucci
To: All House members
Subject: Women’s Equality Day

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing August 26, 2014, as “Women’s Equality Day” in Pennsylvania.

In 1971, the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as “Women’s Equality Day” in commemoration of the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote, was a result of a peaceful civil rights movement that began in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848. Through the efforts of great women’s rights activists such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Susan B. Anthony and many others, women have enjoyed the right to vote for 94 years while continually working to break down gender barriers in the work place and other areas of society.

Today, we celebrate the accomplishments of those who fought for women’s right to vote, and we renew our support for women’s gender equality efforts. Please join me in sponsoring this resolution.
