MEMORANDUM

Subject: Recognizing the Order of the United Commercial Travelers of America

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the Order of the United Commercial Travelers of America and its Pennsylvania Councils for their service to our communities.

Since 1888, the Order of the United Commercial Travelers of America has been making a difference in the lives of citizens with special needs in communities across the nation. With a number of councils across Pennsylvania, the order’s volunteers provide helping hands and aid to improve education, housing and self-development programs for citizens dealing with challenges ranging from intellectual disabilities to cancer.

Backed by the national order, over 80,000 volunteers in local councils across the U.S. are making a difference in their communities. From a variety of community youth programs to drug awareness and prevention programs, citizens with special needs are encouraged to meet new people and learn new skills. In 2010 alone, local councils have raised $1.1 million for causes and charities, granted $115,000 in scholarships and donated over 130,000 collective hours of volunteer service to communities and causes across the country.

Serving citizens in need is a worthy endeavor. Recognizing organizations that encourage young people to engage in supporting their community and its citizens is something to be recognized and promoted. Giving back to the community by engaging in service projects serves not only those individuals in need, but the volunteers and the community as well.

Please join me in recognizing this national order and its Pennsylvania Councils for their tireless work in support of our citizens with special needs.
