MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 2, 2014 11:52 AM
From: Representative Ted Harhai
To: All House members
Subject: Designate October 2014 as “Senior Bully Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution that designates October 2014 as “Senior Bully Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

National Bullying Prevention Month is a campaign in the United States founded in 2006 by PACER's National Center for Bullying Prevention. The main purpose of this movement is to unite communities and educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention.

We often read about bullying at schools and on the Internet, but bullying also plagues senior centers, assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Between 10 and 20 percent of residents in senior care homes are mistreated by peers, which translate to hundreds of thousands of people. Many incidents of bullying experienced by seniors go unreported.

Please join me in bringing awareness to the abuse some of our seniors ensure by proclaiming October 2014 “Senior Bully Awareness Month” in honor of National Bullying Prevention Month.
