MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 8, 2014 12:57 PM
From: Representative Kevin J. Boyle
To: All House members
Subject: Honoring Philadelphia Rose of Tralee and 2014 Rose of Tralee Maria Walsh

In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation that would recognize and honor Maria Walsh, this year’s Philadelphia Rose of Tralee and 2014 Rose of Tralee.

The Rose of Tralee International Festival is one of Ireland’s longest running festivals. It is based on a 19th century Irish ballad “The Rose of Tralee” about a “lovely and fair” woman named Mary who was called the Rose of Tralee. Each year, Irish communities around the world select their own Rose of Tralee from young women of Irish descent. One woman is selected to be the international Rose of Tralee and act as an ambassador for the festival and the Irish community across the globe. Unlike traditional beauty contests, the Rose of Tralee is selected not for her appearance but for her personality and suitability to represent the global Irish community.

Maria Walsh was selected as Philadelphia’s Rose of Tralee and went to Ireland to be selected as the international Rose of Tralee for 2014. Her courage and outstanding character make her a role model for young women everywhere and an excellent ambassador for the greater Irish community, but for her city, her Commonwealth, and her country.

Please join me in supporting this legislation recognizing and honoring Pennsylvania’s own Maria Walsh.
