Subject: Declaring November 2014 as “Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution designating November 2014, as “Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

Pancreatic Cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States and tends to have a low survival rate. The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 46,420 people will be diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in 2014. A majority of those diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer tend to be over the age of 45.

When symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer, such as jaundice, weight loss and digestive problems, appear it is often too late for an optimistic prognosis. Sadly, it is estimated that almost 40,000 people will die from Pancreatic Cancer, including almost 2,000 Pennsylvanians. Survival rates remain low as there is no cure for Pancreatic Cancer, nor have there been any significant improvements in early detection or treatment methods in the last 25 years.

Please join me in recognizing November 2014, as “Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania, to raise awareness and offer support to those currently battling Pancreatic Cancer throughout the Commonwealth.
