MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 3, 2014 09:36 AM
From: Representative Jerry Knowles
To: All House members
Subject: Funeral Home Owner, Operator, or Employee NOT allowed to serve as Coroner or Deputy Coroner

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation to address the issue of individuals who own, operator, or work at a funeral establishment also serving as Coroners or Deputy Coroners.

Currently, a Coroner or Deputy Coroner may be an owner, operator, or employee of a funeral establishment. This creates a conflict of interest, as this gives them the ability to use their position as Coroner or Deputy Coroner to refer families to their particular funeral establishment. My legislation would state that no person shall be qualified for the office of county coroner or deputy coroner who is an owner, operator, or employee of any funeral establishment.

Please consider sponsoring this legislation that would ensure equality for funeral establishments throughout the Commonwealth.
