MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 7, 2014 03:27 PM
From: Representative Mark B. Cohen
To: All House members
Subject: National Memory Screening Day

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating Tuesday, November 18, 2014, as National Memory Screening Day in Pennsylvania.

November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. Alzheimer’s disease is a slow, progressive disorder of the brain that results in loss of memory and other cognitive function, and eventually death. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States among those over the age of 65. An estimated 280,000 Commonwealth residents are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and the number is closer to 400,000 when adding in those living with related disorders. However, individuals can avoid or correct medical problems connected with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related conditions with early detection.

To promote the importance of early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, one day each November is set aside as National Memory Screening Day. The Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA), as well as local organizations and health care professionals across the country, join in this effort. This year National Memory Screening Day is November 18th. Health care professionals will be available at hundreds of sites to administer free, confidential, face-to-face memory screenings. Information on screening sites is available online at http://www.afascreenings.org or by calling the toll-free number (866) AFA-8484.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution designating Tuesday, November 18, 2014, as National Memory Screening Day in Pennsylvania. If you have any questions, you may contact Kathy Seidl of my office at 7-4117 or kseidl@pahouse.net.

Thank you.
