Subject: | Enhancing Driver Awareness of the Move-Over Law |
In a continuing effort to reduce deadly vehicle accidents and make work zones safer, I plan to introduce legislation to have visible signage placed along Pennsylvania State Highways and the PA Turnpike to raise awareness of Pennsylvania’s “Move Over” Law. Each sign will also include an “in memory of” tribute to a PA resident who tragically lost their life in a roadside accident. The Move Over Law requires drivers approaching an emergency response area who are unable to safely merge into a lane farther away from the response area to "pass the emergency response area at a speed of no more than 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit and reasonable for safely passing.” This legislation will heighten driver awareness of the Move Over Law while honoring the fallen (State Troopers, PennDOT workers, tow truck operators, emergency responders, etc.) who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Ohio recently undertook a similar effort to increase driver awareness of their Move Over law. Since the placement of their signage, there has been a 21.5% decrease in work zone traffic accidents and a 44% decline in overall injury-related accidents throughout the Ohio turnpike’s 241-mile stretch. We can improve the awareness of motorists traveling on our roadways, reduce accidents, and ultimately help save lives here in PA. I hope you will join me as a co-sponsor of this important legislation. |
