Subject: | Resolution to Recognize the 75th anniversary of Israel’s Independence and Pennsylvania’s Special Relationship with Israel |
Soon, I will introduce a resolution to recognize the 75th anniversary of Israel’s Independence and Pennsylvania’s partnership with the nation of Israel. The Capital of Israel is Jerusalem, a city that is sacred ground for millions of Pennsylvanians. Since 1948, Pennsylvania has shared close cultural, religious, economic, and military ties with Israel. In June 1997, Governor Tom Ridge signed Pennsylvania’s first cooperative agreement with Israel. The objective of the five-year pact was to “seek to enhance technological research and economic development as well as to increase cultural awareness in order to promote a deeper understanding of shared values through the economy, arts, technology and education.” Pennsylvania exports more than $314 million worth of manufacturing goods to Israel. Since 1996, Pennsylvania’s exports to Israel have totaled more than $5.1 billion, and Israel now ranks as Pennsylvania’s 26th leading trade partner. Pennsylvania ranks 9th among all states in exports to Israel. In 2016, the General Assembly passed what is now Act 163 which prohibits our commonwealth from contracting with any entity that engages in any radical “Boycott, divestment, and sanctions” activities against Israel. Since 2007, hundreds of Pennsylvania National Guard troops have deployed to the Sinai Peninsula as part of an ongoing international peacekeeping mission to ensure that the 1978 Camp David Accords peace agreement between Egypt and Israel is upheld. Please join me as a co-sponsor to show Pennsylvania’s support and solidarity with the nation of Israel. |
