Subject: Protecting Veterans Against Claim Sharks

In the near future, we plan to introduce legislation that will protect the brave men and women who served this nation against those seeking to exploit their rightfully earned benefits claims.

Veterans often face challenges when applying for and receiving the benefits they deserve. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous individuals and organizations exploit these individuals by charging excessive fees and engaging in predatory practices, taking advantage of our veterans' trust and need for assistance. These “claim sharks” are not VA-accredited and often do not adhere to the high level of professional and ethical standards that our veterans deserve.

Pennsylvania must join the growing number of states enacting specific protections to safeguard our veterans from these exploitative practices.

Our legislation will mirror the proposed federal GUARD VA Benefits Act and will prohibit the charging for veteran-related services, except as permitted under federal law.

By protecting them from unauthorized fees and predatory practices, we can ensure that these men and women receive the benefits they have earned through their service to our country without undue financial burden or exploitation.

I hope that you will join us in co-sponsoring this worthwhile legislation to safeguard against the exploitation of our veterans.

Introduced as SB1145
