| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Commemorating the rich history and sesquicentennial anniversary |
2 | of the Borough of Dunmore. |
3 | WHEREAS, During the latter part of the 18th century, William |
4 | Allsworth founded the geographical area that is today known as |
5 | the Borough of Dunmore; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Before being renamed Dunmore in 1835, the |
7 | geographical area was originally known as Bucktown, which was a |
8 | reference to the abundance of deer that populated its verdant |
9 | landscape; and |
10 | WHEREAS, The Borough of Dunmore derived its name from |
11 | Scotland's Dunmore heritage, which was revered and respected by |
12 | the early settlers of the area; and |
13 | WHEREAS, In 1849, Dunmore opened its first post office with |
14 | George P. Howell serving as postmaster; and |
15 | WHEREAS, In 1850, as a result of the extensive anthracite |
16 | coal mining activities in the area, the completion of the |
17 | Pennsylvania Coal Company's Gravity Railroad gave rise to a |
18 | spike in population and employment opportunities in Dunmore; and |

1 | WHEREAS, On April 10, 1862, following fragmentation and |
2 | municipal independence within the Township of Providence, |
3 | Dunmore was incorporated; and |
4 | WHEREAS, In 1863, the Dunmore Police Department was |
5 | established; and |
6 | WHEREAS, On December 5, 1864, the Cemetery Association of |
7 | Dunmore was formed to establish proper public burial boundaries |
8 | for borough residents; and |
9 | WHEREAS, In 1868, due to its burgeoning population, Dunmore |
10 | constructed its first high school; and |
11 | WHEREAS, On March 25, 1885, Dunmore established its first |
12 | fire department, known as the Columbia Hose Company, which later |
13 | changed its name to the Independent Hose Company, No. 1; and |
14 | WHEREAS, In 1887, Dunmore erected its first borough hall on |
15 | South Blakely Street; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Also in 1887, Calvin Spencer served as the borough's |
17 | first burgess, and F. D. Brown served as the borough's first |
18 | clerk; and |
19 | WHEREAS, In 1899, the Dunmore Police Department became a |
20 | permanent organization, and George Dierks served as its first |
21 | chief of police; and |
22 | WHEREAS, In 1890, Harry W. Dony launched the borough's first |
23 | periodical, "The Dunmore Pioneer"; and |
24 | WHEREAS, In 1891, a two-story high school known as the |
25 | Central School was constructed in Dunmore, and its first four- |
26 | year class graduated in 1903; and |
27 | WHEREAS, In 1902, the Fidelity Deposit and Discount Bank of |
28 | Dunmore, the borough's first bank, was founded; and |
29 | WHEREAS, On May 15, 1906, a group of altruistic Italian |
30 | immigrants formed the San Cataldo Society of Dunmore which, |

1 | despite language barriers and other hardships, was effective in |
2 | contributing to the rich and multicultural heritage of Dunmore; |
3 | and |
4 | WHEREAS, In 1910, the bank later known as the First National |
5 | Community Bancorp, Inc., was founded; and |
6 | WHEREAS, From 1912 through 1965, a weekly periodical called |
7 | "The Dunmorean" was published; and |
8 | WHEREAS, In 1962, Gertrude Hawk Chocolates constructed a |
9 | factory and manufacturing plant in the borough; and |
10 | WHEREAS, The Dunmore School District has completed major |
11 | renovations on a continuing basis from the 1960s to the present |
12 | to modernize and improve its learning environment; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Dunmore is the hometown of esteemed individuals such |
14 | as oceanographer John F. Ropek; Second Lieutenant Carol Ann |
15 | Drazba, RN; Brigadier General Christopher F. Burne; Former |
16 | National Football League Pro Bowl Center Tim Ruddy, Hall of Fame |
17 | Umpire Nestor Chylak and retired NASA astronaut Paul William |
18 | Richards; and |
19 | WHEREAS, On November 12, 2007, the Dunmore Historical |
20 | Society, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve |
21 | and foster appreciation of the history and culture of the |
22 | borough, received its approved charter from the Commonwealth; |
23 | and |
24 | WHEREAS, On November 9, 2010, the Pennsylvania American Water |
25 | Company, in collaboration with the Dunmore Historical Society, |
26 | opened a nature trail on 83 acres of land which encompass the |
27 | Dunmore No. 1 Reservoir; and |
28 | WHEREAS, On January 28, 2011, the nature trail was certified |
29 | by the National Habitat Program as a sustainable wildlife |
30 | habitat; and |

1 | WHEREAS, On April 10, 2011, the borough proudly celebrated |
2 | Heritage Day; and |
3 | WHEREAS, April 10, 2012, will mark the 150th anniversary of |
4 | the Borough of Dunmore; and |
5 | WHEREAS, It is fitting to commemorate this important |
6 | milestone due to the important contributions the Borough of |
7 | Dunmore has made to this Commonwealth's history; therefore be it |
8 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the |
9 | rich history and the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Borough |
10 | of Dunmore. |
