Subject: | Proposed Legislation - Change Tax Reporting Period |
In the near future, I will be reintroducing former HB 2104 that will change the tax reporting period for public charities in Pennsylvania. Under federal and state law, public charities must register with both the IRS and the Pennsylvania Department of State on an annual basis. However, due dates for registration with these entities differ causing unnecessary confusion. Currently, the Department of State requires charities to file within 135 days after the end of its fiscal year while the IRS uses the fifteenth day of the fifth month after the end of its fiscal year. My legislation will change Pennsylvania’s reporting period to match the federal reporting period. This change will simplify the process for Pennsylvania’s nonprofits and eliminate the confusion.
