In the very near future, I will introduce a resolution designating February 2013 as “American Heart Month” in Pennsylvania. I hope you will join me in support of this important occasion. According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. It is also one of the most expensive diseases to treat, creating a total estimated cost of $312.6 billion. In Pennsylvania, more than 40,000 people die each year from this disease, and nationwide cardiovascular disease kills one person every 40 seconds. The American Heart Association’s goal is to reduce deaths from cardiovascular disease by twenty percent through research, intervention and policy by the year 2020. The American Heart Association is celebrating the month of February as “American Heart Month”, to promote education and awareness, encourage citizens to learn the warning signs and prepare them to respond to those signs. With this in mind, my resolution would designate February as “American Heart Month” in Pennsylvania and urge all residents of the Common Wealth to be aware of the dangers and warning signs of cardiovascular disease. |
