Subject: | Resolution Recognizing the Legacy of Roxanne Jones |
To: Members of the House of Representatives Attn: Representative J.P. Miranda Date: March 13, 2013 RE: Resolution Recognizing the Legacy of Roxanne Jones In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing and acknowledging the achievements and contributions of the late-State Senator Roxanne Jones. Roxanne Jones was the first African-American woman to represent a Pennsylvania legislative district. In 1984, she was elected to the state Senate, and then reelected in 1988 and 1992; she passed away suddenly in 1996. Prior to and during her time in the state Senate, Senator Jones was an unwavering champion of the poor. She fought for change and sponsored legislation in 1987 that created the successful New Directions job-training program that helped move welfare recipients to work and worked on a number of other projects. Roxanne Jones had been the voice in the state Senate for residents of many of North Philadelphia's most impoverished neighborhoods. March is “ National Women’s History Month” and highlights the numerous contributions of women who helped create a more fair and just society for all people. It is important to recognize particular individual women who have made these contributions to the Commonwealth. Please join me in encouraging the House of Representatives to recognize the legacy and importance of the role of Roxanne Jones as an activist and state senator in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. |
