Subject: | PERTUSSIS VACCINE |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation requiring hospitals, before discharging a woman after giving birth, to provide her with educational information on pertussis disease and the availability of a vaccine to protect against pertussis. The purpose of this act is to educate mothers of newborn infants regarding pertussis disease and the availability of vaccine to protect newborn children against pertussis disease. During 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported an increase in pertussis in the majority of states. In addition, Pennsylvania ranked 13th in the country in the incidence of reported cases of pertussis. Pertussis can cause very serious illness which can be potentially life threatening in infants too young to be vaccinated. Of those infants who are hospitalized with pertussis about 1 in 5 will get pneumonia and 1 in 100 will die. The CDC recommends that families and caregivers of new infants be vaccinated at least two weeks prior to coming into close contact with a new infant. |
