Subject: | Include 9/11 Events in School Curriculum |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution that will commemorate the American lives that were lost in the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and encourage this Commonwealth’s school districts to incorporate these events into their government, social studies, and history curriculums at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Given the enormous significance of September 11, 2001, in American history, with the great loss of life that occurred in New York City, at the Pentagon in Virginia, and in a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, I believe we should encourage Pennsylvania’s school districts to teach this subject matter to our students. Indeed, 58 Pennsylvania residents died in this day’s tragic events, and 42 innocent Pennsylvania children lost a parent. Moreover, this Commonwealth’s citizens are numbered among the more than 6,500 men and women who have valiantly fought and died in the ensuing wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and in lands around the world as part of the United States’ declared “War on Terror” that followed these terrorist attacks. We should be vigilant in our efforts to ensure that present and future generations of students understand the gravity and full meaning of the tragic loss of life on 9/11, and the ensuing victorious national resolve and sacrifice made by our service men and women in the fight to defeat the spread of terror and promote freedom around the world. |
