MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Honoring The Brotherhood of Huntingdon Street

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution honoring the accomplishments and
contributions of the Brotherhood of Huntingdon Street.

The Brotherhood of Huntingdon Street is a grassroots organization of 14 African American men, born and raised in the community, who felt compelled to address the many issues that plague the neighborhood. These men are committed to helping the community prosper and grow, while cultivating the inner-strength of the youth in the community by helping children in North Philadelphia (both male and female) aged 8-13. The goal of the Brotherhood of Huntingdon Street is to provide an environment whereby the youth in the community are provided with opportunities for higher education, to not only help them succeed in life, but also to gain a sense of pride and make available alternative methods to cope with life’s stressors, such as succumbing to peer pressure, as well as increasing a sense of self-worth and assimilating to societal norms.

The vision of this group is to re-establish installation of hope into the community by instituting summer youth camps and cash scholarships for academic achievements, assisting in job readiness and vocational training, mentoring programs for both males and females, providing referrals to ABE/GED classes and literacy programs, and utilizing the peer to peer support group philosophy. Even though the organization is in its infancy, it has provided a variety of activities including skating and bowling pasties, trips to local amusement parks, and ongoing mentoring to 50 children

Please join me in honoring the Brotherhood of Huntingdon Street for their accomplishments and contributions to their community.
