MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 24, 2014 08:42 AM
From: Representative Kevin Haggerty
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Urging the Government of Burma to End the Persecution of the Rohingya People and Respect Internationally Recognized Human Rights for All Ethnic and Religious Minority Groups within Burma.

In the near future, I plan on introducing a resolution urging the Government of Burma to end the persecution of the Rohingya people and respect internationally recognized human rights for all ethnic and religious minority groups within Burma.

The United States Department of State, beginning in 1999 has expressed its concern for legal, economic, and social discrimination against Burma’s Rohingya population in its Country Report for human Rights Practices.

The Burma Citizenship Law of 1982 excludes the Rohingya people from the list of approved ethnic groups rendering the Rohingyas stateless and vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. These abuses include arbitrary arrest, detention, and extortion of Rohingya and other Muslim communities.

In recent years, the violence against ethnic Muslim populations, including the Rohingya and other Muslim groups has escalated dramatically resulting in mass destruction of property and hundreds of deaths.

Please consider joining me in calling on the Government of Burma to end all forms of persecution and discrimination of the Rohingya people and ensure respect for internationally recognized human rights for all ethnic and religious minority groups within Burma.
