Re: Request for Co-sponsorship: Resolution Honoring Cesar Chavez

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution honoring the life and leadership of civil rights and labor leader Cesar Chavez.

Taking a job as a migrant farm worker at a young age after his father was injured on the job, Cesar Chavez gleaned an early awareness of the struggles and plight of farm workers laboring to provide for their families. Having a full understanding of the difficulties faced by farm workers Chavez worked to bring justice to the exploited worker, which led to the establishment of the National Farm Workers Association in 1962, now the United Farm Workers.

Chavez’s willingness to risk his own well-being for the cause led him to fast many times in an effort to bring attention to the plight of farm workers. Through his persistence and dedication, he proved that workers could maintain their self-respect during their efforts for justice using only non-violent means to promote their cause.

Mr. Chavez was honored with the Medal of Freedom, presented posthumously by President Bill Clinton on August 8, 1994. This honor is but one step in ensuring that Mr. Chavez’s teachings and principles remain an integral part of the history of this country. His bequest provides a great example of what may be accomplished when significant hurdles are approached in a peaceful and dignified manner.

Please join me in honoring the life and legacy of a man who made it his lifelong task to secure justice for our farm workers, Cesar Chavez.
