Subject: | Recognizing June 27, 2014, as “National HIV Testing Day” in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan on introducing a resolution recognizing June 27, 2014, as “National HIV Testing Day” in Pennsylvania. Approximately 1.8 million people in the United States have been infected by HIV/AIDS since the first cases were reported in 1981, with approximately 50,000 newly infected people in the United States each year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends routine HIV testing for all patients between the ages of 13 and 64, regardless of risk factors. It is important for individuals who are HIV-positive to learn their status in order to obtain counseling on managing their health, access appropriate medical and social services, begin life-prolonging treatment, and take actions to avoid spreading the virus to others. I hope you can consider joining me in encouraging individuals to get tested for HIV and educate themselves about the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. |
