Subject: | Proposed Legislation - The Shoofly Pie as the Official State Pie of Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation designating the Shoofly Pie as the Official State Pie of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The request was initiated by third graders from McDonald Elementary School who were learning about Pennsylvania's government and symbols. They noticed there wasn't a food symbolizing Pennsylvania and asked if I would introduce the Shoofly Pie as the official State pie of Pennsylvania The Shoofly Pie is a unique and tasty Pennsylvania treat. As you likely know, it is common in the state’s Amish and Mennonite communities and is, perhaps, the dessert we most associate with these communities. While there is uncertainty surrounding the origins of the pie’s name, some believe that it can be attributed to the pools of sweet, sticky molasses that sometimes form on the surface of the pie while it is cooling, invariably attracting flies. Regardless of its history or origins, the Shoofly Pie has a special place in Pennsylvania’s culinary history and in the hearts of Commonwealth residents and visitors alike. I hope you will join me as a co-sponsor of this legislation. If you have any questions please contact Connie McClure in my Harrisburg office at 705-7170 or by e-mailing cmcclure@pahousegop.com. Thank you for your consideration of this legislation. |
