MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 18, 2014 02:41 PM
From: Representative Cherelle L. Parker
To: All House members
Subject: Co-sponsorship Memo for Michele A. Roberts Resolution

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing and honoring Michele A. Roberts on her selection as the new Executive Director of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA).

Known for her leadership and determination, Ms. Roberts beat out more than 300 candidates, receiving 32 of 34 votes cast, to become the first woman to head a major North American professional sports union. The NBPA proclaimed that Ms. Roberts’ “resolve, enthusiasm and vision for the future of the NBPA made her the perfect fit.”

Ms. Roberts is a well-respected attorney who rose from humble beginnings in the Bronx to become a prominent trial lawyer. Following her graduation from law school at the University of California at Berkley, she worked at the Public Defender Service in the District of Columbia for eight years before moving to private practice. She is currently a partner at the prestigious law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP & Affiliates in Washington, D.C.

While her selection as Executive Director dramatically shatters a glass ceiling in a male-dominated industry, Ms. Roberts is cognizant that she will face additional barriers in her position because of her gender. However, she is well-equipped to address such obstacles having consistently demonstrated a willingness to tackle tough situations with confidence and tenacity.

Please join me in recognizing and honoring Michele A. Roberts for her extraordinary accomplishment.

Thank you for your consideration.
