In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution urging the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to maintain wrestling as an Olympic sport. As you may be aware, the IOC’s executive board recently voted to remove wrestling from the 2020 Summer Olympics. While this is not a final decision, without intervention, it is highly unlikely the IOC would vote to reinstate wrestling so soon after removing it. As a former state champion and member of the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame, I believe the IOC is making a mistake by eliminating a sport that was not only part of the modern Olympics, but also the ancient Olympics. Further, wrestling’s popularity cuts across many countries and cultures. During the London Games, 29 different countries won Olympic medals in wrestling. |
