Subject: | LBFC Natural Gas Fuel Study for SEPTA Buses |
In the near future, I plan to reintroduce Senate Resolution 38 of last session. This resolution directs the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee (LBFC) to conduct a study on the feasibility and effectiveness of converting the Southeastern Transportation Authority (SEPTA) bus system to natural gas fuel. SEPTA buses serve tens of thousands of destinations throughout the southeast region and are a major contributor to air quality impacts. Natural gas transit buses have demonstrated significant emission reductions over conventional diesel counterparts, and displace millions of gallons of petroleum-based fuels annually. Natural gas buses have been deployed in other areas of the Commonwealth successfully, including the Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA), and has been met with support as a way to reduce use of imported oil, as well as improve air quality. This report would study the feasibility to convert the SEPTA fleet to natural gas alternative fuel vehicles, and show the effectiveness the switch would have on improving air quality and reducing fuel costs. If you have any questions with regard to this co-sponsorship, please contact Scott Sikorski in my office at 787-1377 or ssikorski@pasen.gov. |
