Subject: | Resolution – Distracted Driving Awareness Month |
In the near future, I plan on again introducing a resolution designating the month of April 2014 as “Distracted Driving Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving thus endangering driver, passenger, and bystander safety. Distraction occurs any time someone takes their eyes off the road, their hands off the wheel, and their mind off their primary task of driving safely. Any non-driving activity is a potential distraction and increases the risk of an accident. The young and most inexperienced drivers are most at risk, 16 percent of all distracted driving crashes occur involving drivers under 20 years old. According to national statistics, in 2012, 3,328 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver and an additional 421,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. The best way to end distracted driving is to educate all Pennsylvanians about the danger it poses and continue to encourage safe driving habits. Please join me in supporting this resolution. |
