Subject: | College Tuition Waivers for Foster Youth |
I plan to introduce legislation which will provide college tuition waivers for qualified foster care youth who enroll in a state funded educational institution. Participating students will be required to complete community service each year and maintain a minimum grade point average. The bill waives the small amount of tuition that is not covered by state and federal aid. There are currently seventeen states that offer tuition waivers to foster children. Only half of foster youth obtain a high school diploma or GED. Less than 10% obtain a Bachelor’s degree. A tuition waiver is one step we can take to help ensure these youth make a smooth transition into adulthood and become productive members of the community.
