Subject: | Crediting Municipal Police Pension Benefits for Previous Part-time Work - (Prior HB 1752) |
In the near future, I will be re-introducing legislation that will amend the Municipal Police Pension Law (Act 600) to permit a municipal or regional police officer who has been employed full-time for at least six months, to have the officer’s previous part-time employment with the same force credited to the officer’s employment record for pension benefit purposes. The ordinance or resolution establishing the police pension fund may provide for full service credit for each full or partial year of part-time service, not to exceed five years. The amount due for the purchase of credit for the part-time service would be computed in a similar manner as is used for the purchase of each year or fraction of a year of military service. Considering the important work that our municipal and regional police officers undertake on the public’s behalf, this increased benefit for municipal and regional police officers is well deserved.
