MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 30, 2014 08:31 AM
From: Representative Tina M. Davis
To: All House members
Subject: Co-sponsorship of Resolution – 43rd Anniversary of Title IX

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution commemorating the 43rd anniversary of Title IX.

President Richard Nixon signed Title IX into law on June 23, 1972. Title IX provides that "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance. As a result of this landmark legislation, opportunities abound for girls and women both on and off the playing field, providing important life lessons on teamwork, independence and leadership.

According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, 294,015 girls participated in high school sports in 1972. Thanks to Title IX, this number increased to an estimated 3,173,549 in 2010-2011, which is a 979% increase. Beyond sports, Title IX has also ensured that women have the same access to educational opportunities, including advanced degree programs, as their male counterparts.

Please join me in commemorating this landmark legislation by co-sponsoring this resolution.
