Subject: | Convicted Arsonist Registry (former HB766) |
In the near future, I will be re-introducing legislation – former House Bill 766 – to create a registry of convicted arsonists in the Commonwealth. This legislation would assist law enforcement in criminal investigations and prevent future offenses. Arson statistics in Pennsylvania are alarming. There were 9,474 arson offenses within our state from 2009 through 2013. In 2013 alone, there were 1,684 arson offenses, resulting in property damages totaling more than $35 million. Sadly, 72 percent of the damaged property was residential. Despite these staggering numbers, there were only 482 arrests in 2013 for arson offenses. My legislation would help law enforcement to make more arrests, lower these disturbing statistics, and further protect Pennsylvania citizens. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation so that Pennsylvania may follow in the footsteps of states like California, Louisiana, and Ohio which already maintain arson registries.
