Subject: | Reduction in Size of House of Representatives |
In the near future, I plan to re-introduce my legislation (formerly HB 485) which would reduce the size of the House of Representatives legislative districts. This is legislation that I first introduced in 2007 when there was very little discussion of the reduction in the size of the Legislature. Since that time former Speaker Smith introduced legislation addressing this issue but structuring the reduction in a different manner. While former Speaker Smith’s proposed bill made this concept a popular issue, there has remained some resistance to the idea of reduction to the size of the Legislature. That is why I am re-introducing former House Bill 485. My bill proposes a more gradual approach to the reduction of size. Upon enactment of this legislation, the House of Representatives would be divided into 193 representative districts. Thereafter, the representative districts would be reduced by 10 legislative districts every 10 years until such time as they reached 153 representative districts. I am hopeful that this may be an approach that could gain traction in both legislative bodies. I ask for your support and invite you to join me in cosponsoring this legislation. |
