Subject: | Resolution Recognizing February 12, 2015, as “Darwin Day” in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, we will be introducing a resolution recognizing February 12, 2015, as “Darwin Day” in Pennsylvania. As you may know, Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England, on February 12, 1809. In 1831, he embarked on a five-year journey to explore and learn about our world. His studies of numerous specimens obtained during his voyage led him to formulate his theory of evolution and his views on the process of natural selection. Subsequently, he published his groundbreaking scientific research in On the Origin of Species in 1859. A movement to establish a widely recognized “Darwin Day” to celebrate his contributions began very early in the 21st century, when prominent scientists and historians, who had been singularly promoting efforts to recognize Darwin and his work, united to form the Darwin Day Celebration. They came together in a desire to inspire mankind to reflect and act on the principles of intellectual bravery, perpetual curiosity, scientific thinking, and hunger for truth. Please join us in recognizing Charles Darwin’s historic scientific achievements and their profound impact on mankind and our understanding of the world. |
