Subject: | Increasing hazardous material emergency preparedness |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that would amend the Hazardous Material Emergency Planning and Response Act to expand local emergency planning committee membership and increase emergency reporting requirements. Specifically, this legislation would require the inclusion of a 911 coordinator and a representative of the regional Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) office on any local emergency planning committee. My proposal would also add the county emergency management coordinator, 911 coordinator, and the regional PEMA office to the list of individuals and agencies that receive written notification after an extremely hazardous substance arrives at a site or facility. I believe that every reasonable precaution should be taken where hazardous materials and substances are concerned. My legislation would provide local firefighters and first responders with the lifesaving information that is needed to better assess an emergency situation at a location where hazardous materials are present. Please join me in this effort to increase the safety of our emergency personnel and the general public. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
