Subject: | Legislation to recognize the observance of Vaisakhi |
I will be introducing a house resolution that will recognize the observance of Vaisakhi. The holiday of Vaisakhi is observed by Sikhs around the world, celebrating the spring harvest as well as the founding of the Khalsa Panth in 1699, when Sikhism was born as a collective faith. Sikhs have not only made valuable contributions to our Commonwealth and our nation, but in the world. Their gallantry and self-sacrifice was epitomized at the Battle of Saragarhi in September of 1897, during the Tirah Campaign war. They chose to hold their ground during an Afghan attack, even with no hope of reinforcement. All 21 soldiers of the 36th Sikh regiment lost their lives, prolonging the war long enough to allow their allies to repel the invading force. Please join me in honoring the Sikh people and their faith. |
