MEMORANDUM

Subject: National Day of Silence Resolution

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution supporting the goals and ideals of the “National Day of Silence”. The National Day of Silence was founded in 1996 and has become the largest single student-led action towards creating safer schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) has designated the third day of every April as the “National Day of Silence”. On this day, students take a vow of silence to bring attention to the anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender name-calling, bullying, and harassment faced by individuals in schools. A 2013 survey conducted by GLSEN has shown that 85% of students have experienced verbal harassment, 40% of students have experienced physical harassment, and 4 out of 10 students stated they feel unsafe in their school as a result of their sexual orientation and their gender expression.

Please join me in supporting this legislation and to help protest harassment, discrimination and hate against students, teachers and staff as a result of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
