Subject: | Resolution recognizing April as Autism Awareness Month |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing April 2015 as Autism Awareness Month in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As many of you know, autism is a complex neurological developmental disorder which affects a person’s ability to learn, interact, and understand verbal and non-verbal communication. Autism is a spectrum disorder, affecting individuals differently and to varying degrees. Today, the rate of autism in the United States is 1 in 68 children, an increase of 119 percent since the year 2000. While there is no cure for autism, early diagnosis and intervention have proven to be extremely important. This is why awareness and education must continue to be a priority for our commonwealth and our nation. When detected early, symptoms can be significantly improved with treatment, and in some cases, can be completely overcome. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution, as we continue to search for ways to support those afflicted with this disorder, as well as their families. |
