Subject: | "Jonas Oven Preservation and Restoration Day" |
In the near future we will be introducing a resolution designating August 18, 2015 as “Jonas Oven Preservation and Restoration Day” in Pennsylvania. The Jonas Oven was built around 1790 and is one of the oldest manmade structures in Monroe County. Regrettably, the Jonas oven was almost lost due to arson at the Jonas Hotel and the proposed destruction of the hotel by its owners in 2005. However, when the Polk Township Historical Society showed interest in preserving the oven, the Jonas Snyder family decided to donate the oven to the historical society provided the oven was removed from the Jonas property. In March 2010 after several fundraising events, the historical society raised enough money to have the oven moved from Jonas to the West End fairgrounds next to the Fair’s museum This year the restoration project will be complete allowing the residents to once again enjoy this important piece of history. Please consider joining us in co-sponsoring this resolution in recognizing the completion of the preservation and restoration of the oven by designating August 18, 2015 as “Jonas Oven Preservation and Restoration Day” in Pennsylvania. |
