| Subject: | Recognizing the 25th Anniversary of the Signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act |
| In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation recognizing the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. Until the signing of the ADA, disabled individuals in this country faced barriers to employment, transportation, public accommodations and public services. Their efforts to receive an education, find employment and simply become contributing members of society were undermined. This groundbreaking law not only changed the lives of disabled individuals, but positively impacted society as a whole. Prohibiting discrimination based on impairment or disability, this act was modeled after the Civil Rights Act and section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and as such, is often described as the Emancipation Proclamation for the disabled community. It has been touted as the most comprehensive disability rights legislation in history. Since its enactment, the ADA has broken down barriers for millions of disabled individuals in the United States and in this Commonwealth. Through this pioneering legislation, disabled citizens are able to participate in the workforce, pursue an education, utilize public transportation and most importantly, fully participate in and contribute to society.
