Subject: | Resolution Recognizing the Month of August 2015 as National Immunization Awareness Month in Pennsylvania |
In the very near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the month of August 2015 as "National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM)" in Pennsylvania. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this awareness month "provides an opportunity to highlight the need for improving national immunization coverage levels." The CDC supports and encourages efforts to celebrate NIAM and to use this month to promote immunizations. Also, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, "The goal of NIAM is to increase awareness about immunizations across the life span, from infants to the elderly. NIAM is a vehicle for creating positive messages about the value of vaccines and highlighting local, grassroots immunization initiatives. Immunizations are the most successful and cost-effective public health tools for preventing disease and death. Maintaining high immunization rates protects the entire community by interrupting the transmission of disease-causing bacteria or viruses. "During the month of August, parents are enrolling children in school, students are entering or returning to college campuses, and healthcare workers are preparing for the upcoming flu season. This is the perfect time to remind family, friends, co-workers and community members to catch up on their vaccinations." Please join me in recognizing the month of August 2015 as "National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM)" in Pennsylvania by cosponsoring this resolution as we continue to support the efforts, programs, services, and organizations that work across the globe to enhance public awareness of the importance of immunization. |
