MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 15, 2015 10:30 AM
From: Representative Donna Bullock
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution designating the month of October as “Meet the Blind Month” and recognizing October 15, 2015 as “White Cane Safety Day” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I will be introducing a Resolution designating the month of October as “Meet the Blind Month” and recognizing October 15, 2015 as “White Cane Safety Day” in Pennsylvania.

In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson commended the blind and visually impaired for their growing spirit of independence and their increased determination to be self-reliant and dignified despite their condition. In addition, the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), the Lions Club International and other organizations promote two events in October “Meet the Blind Month” and “White Cane Safety Day” to educate the public about blindness, visual impairment, and the efforts citizens across the our great land put forth to lead full and active lives. The white cane allows every blind or visually impaired person to move freely and safely about and, absent the cane, such travel would be dangerous.

To the end, I am proud to offer this Resolution recognizing the importance of the white cane and to highlight awareness of this day. With that said, if you have any questions, please contact my office at (717) 787-3480.

Introduced as HR510
