Subject: | Preserving State Sanctions Against Iran |
In 2014 the General Assembly enacted legislation to prohibit the Commonwealth from entering into contracts with individuals, businesses and other organizations engaged in investment activities in Iran. Under this law, these “Iran-free” procurement limitations will expire if Iran is removed from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list or if the President or the Congress declares that the law or similar laws in other states interfere with U.S. foreign policy. Given that the Iran nuclear deal raises concerns regarding our national security and the threat of terrorism, I believe that our state law should remain strong. That is why I plan to introduce legislation that would eliminate the President’s ability to strike down the sanctions in the 2014 Iran-free procurement law through an executive order or other declaration, without further input and approval from the Pennsylvania Legislature. Please join me in cosponsoring this important and timely legislation. |
