MEMORANDUM

Posted: November 4, 2015 12:45 PM
From: Representative Adam Ravenstahl
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution designating November 2015 as "National Family Caregivers Month” in Pennsylvania

I intend to offer a House resolution designating November 2015 as National Family Caregivers Month in Pennsylvania, and I invite you to join me in honoring all family caregivers.

According to an AARP study, there are over 1.6 million family caregivers statewide caring for an older adult. Family caregivers provide unconditional love and support which allows those in need to remain in a home environment, saving the state millions of dollars by keeping frail seniors out of expensive nursing homes.

The theme of this year’s National Family Caregivers Month is “Respite: Care for the Caregivers” to bring attention to how important it is that we provide family caregivers with a break so they can rest and rejuvenate, or take advantage of support programs in their communities.

While family caregivers find the work they do very rewarding, the physical, emotional and financial stress associated with caregiving can lead to health issues for the caregiver. Respite is a way for caregivers to rest and rejuvenate and take care of their own personal health needs.

Please join me in recognizing Pennsylvania’s family caregivers and the importance of respite services that enable them to continue providing care to a family member or loved one.
