Subject: | Co-sponsorship of Resolution Urging Congress to Prohibit “Paid Patriotism” Contracts with Professional Sports Teams |
In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution that would urge Congress to put an end to the Department of Defense’s “Paid Patriotism” sports marketing contracts with professional sports teams and leagues. These taxpayer funded events include payments by the Department of Defense for tickets, salutes, color guards, anthems and other patriotic events designed to honor our brave men and women. Professional sports teams often lead the public to believe that these are strictly patriotic and charitable actions with any associated costs being borne by the team. Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake’s “Tackling Paid Patriotism Joint Oversight Report” uncovered that many of these events are in fact paid for by the military. It is my strong opinion that these valuable military dollars being given to professional sports teams would be better spent serving our veterans. Please join me in supporting this resolution. |
