MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 16, 2016 12:35 PM
From: Representative Brian Sims
To: All House members
Subject: Request for Co-sponsorship: Designating “Equal Pay Day”

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating “Equal Pay Day” in the Commonwealth, to be observed April 12, 2016.

This year marks the 57th Anniversary of Pennsylvania’s Equal Pay Law. However, in the decades since its adoption, women and their families continue to suffer the consequences of pay inequity. Their work and sacrifice warrants a change to eradicate this gender gap.

More than 58 percent of the workforce in Pennsylvania is comprised by women, many of whom represent the sole bread-winners in their families. Yet, these women earn only 79 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts. Over the span of a career, such wage inequalities can become significant, adversely effecting a woman’s retirement and Social Security contributions. Consequently, women may face serious financial challenges upon retirement.

Every citizen in Pennsylvania deserves equality in their wage, regardless of gender. As legislators, we must recognize and eliminate gender-based inequality and promote policies that will ensure fair pay for all.

I hope that you will join me in recognizing the need for equal pay in Pennsylvania by co-sponsoring this resolution.
