Subject: | Recognizing The Observance of Ramadan |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the observance of the Holy month of Ramadan. Commemorated this year from June 6 through July 5, the Holy month of Ramadan represents one of the most important holidays in the Muslim world. During this time, Muslims practice Sawm, abstaining from food, drink and other pleasures from dawn to sunset, devoting themselves to reflection and reading the Quran. These practices act in cleansing believers from thoughts and deeds which are counter to Islam. Ramadan culminates with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Fast Breaking. At this time, Muslim families share generous traditional evening meals with people of all faiths. Friends and family are invited into their homes or mosques to observe this special time of the year. In this way, the celebrants share their culture and their faith with the larger community, promoting understanding and inclusion for all. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution recognizing our Islamic communities across the Commonwealth as they celebrate the Holy month of Ramadan. |
