MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 2, 2016 12:54 PM
From: Representative David Parker and Rep. Mary Jo Daley
To: All House members
Subject: "WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK" in Pennsylvania

In the near future, we will introduce a resolution designating August 1st through August 7th as “World Breastfeeding Week” in Pennsylvania. I hope you will join us in this effort.

World Breastfeeding Week was designated by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, a group which advocates for a concerted global action to support women who breastfeed. This year’s theme for World Breastfeeding Week is “Breastfeeding: A Key to Sustainable Development.” We know that breastfeeding helps to make healthy babies and healthy moms, which leads to cost-effective outcomes for employers and working mothers returning to their jobs.
Study after study makes it abundantly clear – both mothers and children benefit from breast milk. For most babies, especially premature babies, breast milk is easier to digest than formula and helps fight against disease. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the cells, hormones, and antibodies in breast milk help protect babies from illness. For mothers, breastfeeding is linked to a lower risk of health problems such as diabetes, breast and ovarian cancers, and postpartum depression. Moreover, breastfeeding mothers miss fewer days from work because their infants are sick less often.
With this resolution, we support the overall goals of World Breastfeeding Week in creating a more breastfeeding-friendly environment in Pennsylvania’s workplaces and beyond.

We hope that you will co-sponsor this legislation and join us in our efforts.
