Subject: | Resolution designating September as Sepsis Awareness Month |
Shortly, I will be introducing a Resolution declaring the month of September as Sepsis Awareness Month. We recognize the devastating effects of Sepsis, the leading cause of death in our nation’s hospitals and a silent killer that claims more than 258,000 lives in the United States. Sepsis is a blood infection and an equal-opportunity invader; it significantly impacts our elderly and children. One person is diagnosed with Sepsis every 20 seconds, which leaves 1.6 million people affected annually. The fact that one person dies from Sepsis every two minutes in the United States compels us to act. We commend our health care partners like PinnacleHealth System for championing this public health campaign. As one of Pennsylvania’s largest health care providers, PinnacleHealth’s aggressive and steadfast commitment to early Sepsis diagnosis and prevention has resulted in a 40 percent overall reduction in Sepsis deaths in the last year, saving 10-12 lives each month. We join PinnacleHealth in their pledge to protect, educate, and advocate for early Sepsis diagnosis and prevention for every Pennsylvanian, and in educating health systems across the country in effective protocols and Sepsis Best Practice. I hope you will please join me in sponsoring this Resolution. |
