MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 4, 2016 04:38 PM
From: Representative Donna Bullock and Rep. W. Curtis Thomas
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution urging Amtrak to re-designate the railroad station located at 2955 Market Street in Philadelphia, PA as the “William H. Gray, III 30th Street Station”

In the coming days, we plan to introduce a Resolution urging Amtrak to re-designate the railroad station located at 2955 Market Street in Philadelphia, PA as the “William H. Gray, III 30th Street Station.”

As you may know, from 1979 until 1991, William H. Gray, III represented Pennsylvania’s Second Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives and, for the final two years of his career in Congress, Mr. Gray served as the Majority Whip. At that time, Mr. Gray was the highest ranking African-American Member of Congress. In addition, Mr. Gray also attained the distinction as the first African-American to rise to the third-ranking House position and to the chairman of the House Budget Committee. In 1991, Mr. Gray resigned from Congress to become the President and CEO of the United Negro College Fund. In this role, Mr. Gray raised more than $2.3 billion during his tenure which ended in 2004.

On July 1, 2013 at the age of 71, Mr. Gray passed away. The next summer, Congress passed and President Obama signed H.R. 4838 re-designating the “30th Street Station” as the “William H. Gray, III 30th Street Station.” However, despite this re-designation under Public Law 113-158, which was enacted over two years ago, Amtrak has not officially re-designated the station at this writing.

As a result of this inaction by Amtrak, and as Members of this House of Representatives, we are introducing this Resolution urging Amtrak to take immediate action. Therefore, if you have any questions, please contact Takesha Latham in Representative Donna Bullock’s office at 717-787-3480.
