Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 1, 2014 03:46 PM
From: Senator Christine M. Tartaglione
To: All Senate members
Subject: Co-Sponsorship of Legislation: Office for People with Disabilities

In the near future, I plan to re-introduce legislation, formerly S.B. 280 of 2013-2014, which would create the Office for People with Disabilities within and to be administered by the Office of the Governor. While this office has been established by Executive Order, my legislation would make the office permanent by statute.

The Office for People with Disabilities provides essential services for people with disabilities and their families. Through the expertise of its members, the office supports and empowers Pennsylvania’s disabled population by undertaking basic, but necessary, functions, such as identifying gaps and funding deficits in disability services and programs, advocating for increased availability of and access to those services and planning for program improvements statewide.

In consideration of the great strides the disability community has made in the Commonwealth, it is important this progress continues in the future. Making the Office for People with Disabilities a permanent fixture in Pennsylvania will help to ensure this occurs.

Previous co-sponsors of this bill include Senators Teplitz, Brewster, Vulakovich, Costa, Rafferty, Hughes, Browne and Smith.

Introduced as SB271
